Lines 1017-1018 ~ The Shielding nation was not yet familiar with feud and betrayal.
This is a foreshadow to one of two things; either the fact that Grendel is dead now, so neighboring countries are going to ambush the Danes and eventually take over and destroy everything that Hrothgar has built up. OR the fact that Hrothgar’s nephew is going to kill his sons.
The feud will be with the Hereobards. The betrayal will be with Hrothgar's nephew. Foreshadow, parallelism. Think structure.
